Everything is delayed with the glasses and you can't hear other people talk.

The microphones range is somewhat limited. But you should be able to hear things, especially during the commercial breaks.

It's just a black screen on my iPad. What type of an image is being used?

It looks like it is an Adobe Flash image and that won't work on the iPad or iPhone.
