Excited to speak on Campus Crimes with @13NickOchsner
-
The fastest way to find out about campus crime is to search for the "Annual Security Report" on a college's website - this may also be called a "Crime Report"
-
Campus sexual assaults have been increasingly reported since 2010 due to several high profile survivors speaking out and improved laws on campus sexual violence
-
Title IX, the Clery Act and VAWA work together on campus to ensure sexual violence and other gender violence, such as stalking, dating violence, and domestic violence, get reported and addressed by campuses
-
Hi guys-- thanks for joining our live chat! Laura and I are excited to answer your questions for the next hour
-
So how did this Virginia Wesleyan case not get reported? Why weren't the police involved?
-
This makes no sense....teachers in public schools are required to report signs of abuse of children? Why aren't colleges required to do the same?
-
Title IX addresses sexual violence as a civil rights violation to prevent harm to a student's education, whereas the criminal system addresses sexual violence as a crime to prevent harm to the general community
-
Is there a difference between the rules for public schools like ODU and private ones?
-
Laura- in VWC's response to the lawsuit filed against them, they included the anonymous sexual assault report form filed by Jane Doe. The form goes to the dean of students and not to the campus security sexual assault response officer. Can you weigh in on whether or not that's a best practice?
-
Did you know that some investigative journalism shows campus sexual violence systematically under investigated by police?
On Florida campuses, rape allegations don't bring convictions
Orlando SentinelNo one gets convicted of campus rape at Florida's public universities, an analysis of records has found. In 2012 and 2013, 55 rapes were reported to campus police departments, show records reviewed... -
Is this something that the state needs to look at or the feds?
-
VAWA expanded campus crime reporting to include dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking along with sexual violence - colleges need to be doing incoming and ongoing prevention with students and staff on all gender violence
-
My daughter goes to UVa. How do I find out if they are reporting crime more immediately?
-
By October 1 (each year) colleges must distribute an Annual Security Report noting their prevention efforts, crime statistics, and policies for addressing campus crime - if you cannot find it at your school it may be in violation of the Clery Act and can be reported to Clery@ed.gov
